Not only did the early Lyme artists leave behind a superb body of work, they bequeathed to us the tradition of summertime fun. Miss Florence and the artists would be pleased to know that the gallery they built is now open year-round. Today, the LAA mounts several major exhibitions yearly. Opening night receptions remain festive occasions. Professional as well as developing artists form the heart of the LAA which now boasts over 1,000 members. With a busy schedule of art classes, workshops and a popular lecture series, the Lyme Art Association is strong and vibrant. A century has lapsed since visitors to the exhibitions arrived by horse and buggy. Looking back at that kind and gentler era, we think how much the world has changed. But it is heartwarming to realize that some things have remained the same. Old Lyme is still the charming village that Ranger first saw and every June the mountain laurel still blooms. And one hundred years after the first exhibition, artists still set up their easels around town, still congregate at the LAA, and still display fine works in its galleries.

Today, the Lyme Art Association is energized by artists, patrons, and friends who share an enthusiasm for our historic building and who uphold the mission of the association: to advance the cause of fine art through exhibition and education. A varied schedule of juried exhibitions throughout the year encourage and motivate a new generation of artists and highlight their best works.

Associate Artist Member: The LAA welcomes all representational artists to become members of the Association and enter their work in juried exhibitions throughout the year. Associate Artists receive information on all exhibitions and other events at the LAA.

Elected Artist Member: To become an Elected Artist of the LAA: you must be an Associate Artist Member who has exhibited a minimum of four works in LAA juried exhibitions within a two year period; submit a completed application form to the Screening Committee; submit six framed works if a painter, and three sculptures with pedestals as needed, if a sculptor. The Screening Committee reviews applicant’s work and selects candidates for consideration and displays their work prior to the Fall Membership Meeting for all LAA Elected Artists to vote on by sealed ballot. A two-thirds majority of those voting is necessary for approval. Written notice of results will be sent to the applicants.
