Still Life – Portrait Connection: A Comparative Approach - Karen WinslowDescription: Portrait painting scares new artists. After all, there are eyes and noses to deal with. So, to take the fear out of, at least, trying a head study, I have devised a way to transition from still life to portrait. We will begin by painting still life. The same forms, values and planes that we see in still life are applicable to the head, and once the artist sees this connection, it is much easier to handle a portrait. Light, form, space, depth, bone structure, skin tones and planes will be emphasized. We will be using a tonal scale to keep our value/color relationship in check. Extensive instruction will be given in mixing skin tones. Demonstrations and one-on-one critiques, as well as group critiques, will be employed. Oils, pastels and watercolors. All levels. Dates: April 5 and 6, 9am - 4pm Fees: $200 for Members, $225 for Nonmembers Instructor Bio: Karen Winslow is a professional full-time artist, a featured artist in American Artist magazine, and a dynamic instructor. She studied at the Art Students League in New York with Frank Mason from 1973-1978. She moved to Vermont and established the WINSLOW ART STUDIO in 1979 with her husband, Jack Since that time she has been selling paintings and raising 5 children She teaches through demonstrations and one-on-one critiques, and her enthusiasm, years of experience, and joy of painting are contagious.
